Bill Collectors Calling Work? This is How You Stop Them!
But there has to be a certain situation that will stop it.
What is that situation? What is this very specific federal law that I am talking about? Well, the law that I am talking about is called the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, or the FDCPA for short! This law outlines very specific things that the credit and collections industry can and cannot do.
It also outlines the very specific set of rules that these agencies must abide by "...
in an attempt to collect a debt.
" The FDCPA was created more than 30 years ago to address the numerous abuses of the credit and collections industry.
But the sad thing is that most of the general public have no idea that this law exists! The credit card companies know all about it! But we, the consumers do not! I bet if more people knew about the laws that have been inacted to protect them, the credit card companies wouldn't pull half the stuff that they pull! Like calling your job to harass you! Within the FDCPA there is a section that clearly defines that they are not allowed to call your place of employment after you OR your employer has told them that it is not acceptable! Period! Point Blank! It doesn't matter where you live in this world of ours, there is a law similar to the FDCPA in your own little section of the world.
In Canada the law is known as the Collections Agency Act.
In Great Britain it is known as the Consumer Credit Act, and in America it's known as the FDCPA! So depending on where you live, your government has set very specific rules for these companies to follow, or face the consequences!
