Stock Market Investing Advice - You Want to Retire Don"t You?

105 9
Pensions are going bankrupt and investors are just getting wind of this massive problem. Once this information becomes generally known, it will likely decimate the value of many so-called blue-chip companies. What can investors do to protect themselves from the fallout of this problem?

First, if you haven't already, you should get out of stocks and stock mutual funds, including your 401(k) plan. It will be a long time before we can separate the honest operators from the dishonest ones. In the meantime, all companies will likely be punished in a major sell-off of stocks.

Second, if you have a defined benefit pension plan at work, find out as much as you can about it. You may find this information through your benefits department. You are entitled to ask such questions as,

(1) The company's projected rate of return on its pension.

(2) How much of a profit or loss is being reported for the current year.

(3) What the company's current estimated unfunded pension liability is. The biggest mistake most investors make is that pensions are not guaranteed.

If you don't like what you see, don't count on the government to bail you out. Instead, plan on putting away more in your own 401(k) plan and stay at work until you have accumulated enough to retire on your own savings. But is this the best solution or your solution?

Get smart. The little guy is not going to get bailed out by anyone. This is where you grab the bull by the horns (pun intended) and make some money. It's a fact, people are making a killing even in a down market. You can too!
