How to Take Off Nail Shellac at Home
- 1). Remove any top coats of clear nail polish from the shellac with an emery board.
- 2). Fill a small bowl with 100 percent acetone, which is available at hardware or beauty supply stores. Only pour enough acetone into the bowl to cover the nails, as the acetone will dry out your skin.
- 3). Lower the shellac-covered nails of one hand and rest them inside the bowl, paying attention that the nails are completely submerged. The acetone will melt the shellac from the nails.
- 4). Allow the first set of nails to soak in the acetone for 10 minutes. Remove the first hand after the time expires; soak up the remaining acetone in the bowl with a paper towel and toss it into a garbage bag. Refill the bowl with fresh acetone.
- 5). Soak the second hand in the acetone for 10 minutes. Remove this hand and examine the nails on both hands.
- 6). Scrape away any remaining shellac with an orangewood stick. Do not rub the nail too vigorously with the orangewood stick to prevent damaging its surface.
- 7). Cover each nail with a dollop of cuticle oil, moisturizing hand lotion or petroleum jelly. Work the product into the nails and cuticles for one minute to restore any moisture removed by the acetone.
