Queens Pride 2011

Clearly, few cities (or boroughs, if you will) have names better suited to hosting gay pride events than Queens. And while it may not exactly be New York City's biggest gay Mecca, Queens is home to a sizable LGBT community, much of it based around the diverse Jackson Heights neighborhood. The 19th annual Queens Pride will honor that diversity on Sunday, June 5, with a march followed by a Multicultural Festival, events that attract 50,000 people every year.

The Queens Pride parade begins at noon at the corner of 85th Street and 37th Avenue, and makes its way ten blocks down 37th to 75th Street (where the Multicultural Festival will be in full swing just one block over on 37th Road). The parade will include the popular Queenie Awards, wherein judges dole out the Rainbow Award (for best use of color), The Screaming Queens Award (for best use of sound), The Screaming Theme Award (for best use of this year's theme, Pride Around the World), the Bar Excellence Award (for the best bar or club representation), and the Simply the Best Award. There'll also be a Drag Race, with $250 for first place, $150 for second, and $100 for third. (Since the parade goes through a residential neighborhood, participants are advised that nudity and indecency are not allowed.)

The Multicultural Festival will happen from noon to 6pm on 37th Road between 73rd and 77th Streets. In the middle at 75th Street will be the main stage, where performances will begin at 1:30pm.

For the first time, a live web stream of the main stage will beam out to those who can't make it in person.
