How to Change a Pull Start on a Snow Blower

    • 1). Loosen the bolts that secure the top cover on the motor by turning them counterclockwise with a socket and ratchet. Typically there are three to four bolts.

    • 2). Turn over the top cover and wind out the pull-cord mechanism with your hand. This is the same motion as winding out the cord when you pull on it.

    • 3). Wrap a C-clamp around the top cover. Tighten it so it locks the pull-cord mechanism in the fully wound-out position.

    • 4). Cut a 12-inch section of metal wire from the hanger with wire cutters. Straighten it out. Bend a loop on one end of a handle.

    • 5). Secure the replacement rope to the end of the straight wire with electrical tape. Push the wire and rope into the back of the pull-cord mechanism so it comes out of the inside rope hole. Disconnect the rope from the wire and pull the wire back out.

    • 6). Tie a knot in the end of the rope so it won't pull back through the hole. Release the clamp holding the pull-cord mechanism and allow the rope to spool around the pulley.

    • 7). Install the cover on the snow blower, reversing the process used to remove it. Cut the rope so it's long enough to make it to the handlebar.

    • 8). Insert the end of the rope through the pull-cord handle and tie a knot in the end to secure it to the handle.
