Summer time is one of the most fun times for children as school is letting out and they are starting their summer vacations. It is important to protect your child from over exposure to the sun so that he or she doesn't get a sun burn or worse. Too much sun can lead to severe burns which can get infected and in some cases skin cancer may show up years later from too much exposure to the sun. Below are 5 tips to protect kids from the over exposure to the sun. With the right precautions in place your child can enjoy his or her time outdoors playing with friends.

1. Use the right sun screen. Sun screen helps to protect your child from the harmful rays of the sun. It is recommended that you use an SPF of 30 or higher for children and it is best to apply the sunscreen before you venture outdoors. For the best coverage, apply the sun screen before your child gets dressed for outdoor activity. This ensures that you do not miss any spots around the edge of the clothes and it allows the sun screen a chance to soak into the skin for better protection.

2. Stay in the shade. Children six months and younger should never be directly exposed to the sun. Most doctors will tell you that you need to keep your infant in the shade and covered with the right clothing for avoiding sun exposure. There are plenty of outdoor tents for infants that you can use to keep your little one safe from the rays of the sun.

3. Cover up if you will be in the direct sun light for any extended periods of time such as playing at the beach or at the playground. Wearing a hat can help keep the sun off of your child's face, protecting him or her from a sunburn in the sensitive areas of the face. There are also plenty of cover up sun protective clothes and swimwear that are widely sold to give kids protection from the sun but not get them over heated.

4. It is very important to have your child drink plenty of fluids so that they do not get over heated or dehydrated. Fluids with electrolytes are the best which generally come in sports drinks.

5. For the best protection from the sun you should avoid being out in it but for most people that is not possible. Your best bet would be to limit the amount of time you are outside during the sunniest time of the day which is between the hours of 10am and 4pm as the sun's rays are the strongest during this time.

Outdoor play is always the most fun time for kids of all ages but it is very important for parents and caregivers to protect their children as best as possible from the sun's harmful rays.
