The Grand Friday Mosque, also known as the Hukuru Miskiiy, is the oldest mosque in Maldives. It was built in 1651 during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim Iskhandar I and is a popular tourist attraction.

The Grand Friday Mosque is a large mosque located in the Maldivian capital of Male'. Also known as the Hukuru Miskiiy (which means 'Grand Friday Mosque') it is a prominent local landmark and a popular tourist attraction. Constructed in 1651, it is the oldest mosque in the country. Built during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim Iskhandar I, most of the mosque walls are made out of coral. The interior walls are decorated with Arabic calligraphy as well as beautiful, intricate patterns.

Non-Muslims are not allowed inside unless they have obtained prior permission from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs (entrance is free). It is a slight hassle but definitely worth it. There is a strict dress code and those deemed improperly attired may not be allowed to go in. Travellers interested in learning more about the local customs and culture can take a day off from the beach and visit the various attractions in Male'. While the island's capital does not contain great beaches it does contain many historical and cultural treasures such as the Fish Market, Sultan's Palace, and the National Museum.
