How to Take a Pulse on the Inside of the Leg
- 1). Sit in a comfortable position for easy access to the inside of the thigh area. To take the femoral pulse of another individual have him lie on his back with the legs elevated and arms at his sides.
- 2). Remove pants, shoes and socks. Drape a towel over the exposed genitalia.
- 3). Find the femoral artery. Place the fingers of the left hand on the left hip bone. Move them approximately 3 inches inward toward the center of the abdomen. Lower the fingers to the inguinal crease, or where the thigh meets the hip. Concentrate on sensing the palpitations of the pulse. Place the right hand over the left hand, so the fingers are on the artery. Push down so the artery meets the hip bone to feel the actual femoral pulse.
- 4). Count the palpitations for 10 seconds using a clock or timer. Multiply the number of palpitations by six to calculate the heartbeats per minute. The normal resting pulse rate of an adult is 72 beats per minute, which can range from 60 to 100 beats per minute. Children's pulse rates are 90 to 150 beats per minutes, toddlers are 90 to 150 beats per minute and newborns are 120 to 160 beats per minute.
