Uncollege

Have you heard of unschooling before? Many people have.  But what about "uncollege"?  No?  That one was new to me, too. The idea came from Dale J. Stephens, who now runs the Uncollege Program.

The basic idea is that college isn't for everyone and in fact, some kids can do better without going to college. Uncollege offers a "gap year" program. During this year, students go through several phases that include three months of study abroad, and internship, and creating a project someone will pay for -- all great skills for any entrepreneur to learn.

Kids can still go to college, if they want to, but the Uncollege program is far less expensive than any college, costing only about $12,000. Compare that to the cost of a four-year college degree.

The Uncollege might be a great alternative to college for kids who are already eager to get out into the world and be a creator. Remember, not everyone needs to go to college to be successful  - and success is not always measured in terms of dollars. Pursuing a passion and doing what you love can also be a measure of success.

Wondering about other non-college paths to success? Consider some of the more unconventional occupations and see if they might be a fit for your child.
