Myspace.
com has gazillions of users, well tens of millions of users anyway, and is a powerful force online.
Myspace has become an attractive venue for marketers who are trying to reach a certain demographic.
The early success of Myspace was largely due to its popularity with musicians and their huge fan bases.
While you might think that most Myspace users are teenagers, according to Advertising Age, now over 44% of Myspace users are over the age of 35, and this older age group is fast becoming the larger demographic on this wildly popular social networking site.
If you take a look around at some of the popular profiles you will find that this is a venue for average people some of whom happen to be raving fans of certain bands, celebrities, and/or sports teams.
Or teenagers, college students keeping in touch with each other, also there are older people, such as authors selling their books and trying to create a following-there's a place for everyone here.
But marketers must beware before plunging headfirst into the world of Myspace.
The real secret of marketing in Myspace is to simply be real, (yeah I know, that's what the young ones say Be Real!) and engage with your audience.
Join the ongoing conversation and have fun.
In the beginning you'll want to simply test the waters, get some exposure for your business or brand and not worry so much about immediate ROI.
Develop relationships with your friends base and be relevant to their lives.
The first step is to set up a promotional account and promote your company/brand/image using Myspace messages, which are like email so you can include images and links.
Here are some tips for establishing your presence on Myspace.
com: oMake your profile low key and useful and give visitors a good reason to keep coming back oUse demographic targeting to friend users based on age, gender, general interests, location, marital status, etc oSearch for users that fit your customer profile and send friend requests.
When they accept your request, then you can add them to your contact database so that you can send them additional messages in the future.
oComments are indexed by the search engines, so once you have build up a large friends network, leaving relevant comments sprinkled with a keyword or two can give you good exposure, but tread lightly using this method so you don't come off as a spammer oProvide a way to capture visitor's name and email address to add to your database and so that you can continue to communicate with them Another option is banner advertising, based on targeted user demographics.
There is the thought that most Myspace users have become some what blind to all of the ad banners, so it may be more effective to try a less intrusive way to engage with users and get your message to your market.
Marketers should understand the market, find out what moves them, and establish a meaningful presence.
Create messages with viral appeal that users can share with their friends.
If your marketing messages are entertaining, engaging and a good fit to the interests of your audience, then you'll have a hit on your hands.
Just remember "Be Real" and you can't go wrong.
