Liposuction: Does Its Future Involve Use Of Lasers?

There are many cosmetic procedures available that are targeted towards sculpting and smooth out a lumpy physique. In fact, there are plenty of new ones being presented all of the time, especially in the field of liposuction.

There are at least six popular methods and many other experimental and new techniques that are gaining interest in the plastic surgery community. Laser assisted method has recently been approved by the FDA and is becoming one of the better and safer body sculpting options available.

This procedure isn't an entirely different procedure than the traditional method, but rather it uses the latest technology and a more efficient technique to get better results. The fat is removed in a similar way. A hollow tube called a cannula is inserted into the target area.

The plastic surgeon gently moves it back and forth, sucking up excess fat cells into a vacuum and sculpting the area by removing unsightly lumps and bulges. The difference is that laser assisted involves an extra step.

The most common technique is wet or "super" wet, where a mixture of fluid and anesthetic is injected into the body to allow the cannula to move freely in an attempt to minimize damage to surrounding tissue.

Instead of injecting fluid into the body, this procedure uses lasers to liquefy the fat before removal. The light and heat helps melt and loosen the fat, which means even less trauma to the skin and tissue than with the wet methods.

Another benefit of laser assisted liposuction is that the cannula used to remove the fat can be thinner due to the ease of suction. Incisions can therefore be smaller, which also decreases recovery time and potential risks.

The cannula has a light attached at the end which helps the surgeon with more precise fat removal. That means the results can potentially be more natural as the surgeon has much more control than he would if blindly using a cannula.

Recovery from this procedure is generally quicker than with other techniques. Due to the minimal incisions and ease of fat extraction, bruising and swelling which the two main obstacles during recovery are greatly diminished.

Of course, healing is still highly dependent on the individual so there will still be some side effects of varying degrees. Normal liposuction recovery takes about two weeks, but with laser assisted you may find yourself comfortable enough to return to work after a week.

Although FDA approved, there are still further tests being done on laser technique. There has been some evidence that it may help improve collagen production, which would help make the areas treated smoother and tighter than if traditional liposuction was used alone.

It is considered a fairly safe procedure by most surgeons, but as opposed to traditional there is the chance of receiving burns due to the high heat and light of the lasers used; however, this is usually the result of a careless surgeon and not the procedure itself.
