How to Add Salt to Freshwater Tanks
- 1). Learn about the types of fish in your aquarium before adding salt. Read articles online about your particular fish and find out if the breeds you keep in your tank will thrive with salt in the water.
- 2). Measure out 1 tbs. of salt per 5 gallons of water. Be sure the salt you use does not contain any additives such as iodine or potassium.
- 3). Add the salt to the water during initial tank setup or during water changes. When adding salt during water changes, be sure to only add the amount of salt needed for the amount of water you are replacing. For instance, if you remove and replace 10 gallons of water in a 55-gallon tank, only add 2 tbs. of salt.
