Thoughts on the Eric Sheppard Challenge
A radical new challenge is sweeping college campuses around the United States. The concept is to show support for the first amendment. How can this go wrong many will ask? It is simply, the "Eric Sheppard Challenge" is a challenge to all Americans to step on, dance on, and desecrate the American flag. The latest viral video going around the internet shows a woman wearing a University of Michigan sweatshirt dance and stomp on the American flag. This blatant disrespect for the flag makes many cringe and angry. But according to the court decision in Texas v. Johnson (1989), as long as no one is hurt, a person has a right to burn or desecrate a flag.
This new wave of anti-Americanism is scary for the future of our country. It is saddening to see people disgrace the symbol of the country that has guaranteed them these rights. Instead of proudly displaying their gratitude for the country that has given them rights that no other nation has been able to uphold for over two hundred years, they continue to hold the belief that they are being repressed. The map included below shows the freedom of press for all countries around the world. Many researchers but free speech and freedom of press together when they monitor how free a country is. View this link below to see the freedom of press situation throughout the world. As can be seen in the 2013 "Reporters without Borders" release, America ranks very high in freedom of speech. The thought that America is a repressive society is nonsense.

The new interest in destroying a scarred symbol to many Americans is hopefully a fade that will pass in time. Many of the people that participate in these anti-American demonstrations, such as the Eric Sheppard Challenge, do not understand just how great it is to be an American. Instead of looking at the past of the accomplishments in civil and gender rights, they look at the current police violence in cities like Ferguson, Missouri and Baltimore, Maryland. The America of the future does not have to be shaped by people how do not respect the flag that has given them so much. To be an American is truly a gift. So many people flee their homes around the world to partake in the American Dream. The way to combat this escalating anti-American culture is through education changes that show not just the bad that America has done, but show the immense amount of good it has done for not only Americans, but for the entire world.
