How to Organize Cords Behind a Desk
Instructions
1Unplug all of the office equipment located on and around your desk to reorganize the cables. Consider labeling each cable to help you identify it later when you need to unplug or remove the device.
2
Count your plugs to determine the amount of outlets you'll need. Buy power strips so you won't have to use extension cords to run the cables to outlets around the room. Assign equipment that you don't use regularly to one surge protector that you can turn off to save electricity.
3
Plug your equipment in, then carefully wind and bind the excess length with cable ties. Buy "releasable" or Velcro versions so you can make easy adjustments if you need to move a device to another area of your desk. (See Resources)
4
Hang a wire basket under your desk to keep the bundles of cables up off the ground. You can also wind the excess cording into flat caddy that you can affix under or along the side of your desk. (See Resources)
5
Gather cords going to the same piece of equipment (like keyboard, USB hub, mouse and monitor cables going to the computer) with a split tube so they won't tangle if your outlet is several feet from your desk. You may also wish to conceal cables running along the wall with paintable covers. (See Resources)
6
Use a small caddy to contain plugs for rechargeable equipment like your cell phone, music player, camera batteries and portable video games. (See Resources)
