How to Post Journal Entries to General Ledger
- 1). Write the date of the transaction in the 'Date" column.
- 2). Write any debits to accounts under the "Accounts" section. Make sure the account name is flat with the line in the general ledger that divides the "Accounts" section from the "Date" section.
- 3). Write any credits to accounts under the "Accounts" section. Be sure to indent any credits. The indentation is how an accountant tells if an account is debited or credited.
- 4). Write the monetary amount for each debited account under the "Debit Amount" section of the general ledger. Be sure to align the amount debited with the proper account in the "Account" section.
- 5). Write the monetary amount for each credited account under the "Credit Amount" section of the general ledger. Be sure to align the amount credited with the proper account in the "Account" section.
