The Mayor spoke at City Hall and announced there is to be a consultation with the public on the future Ultra low emission zone shortly, with Transport for London said to be preparing all of the options. It is still yet to be revealed exactly how the zone would be defined, with regards to both emission levels and terms and conditions.

Though if the scheme is to come into forced within the proposed schedule it would be a first around the world and will also of course dramatically improve London's air quality.

Boris Johnson explained that to create the first big city low emission zone in the World has the potential to truly be a game changing moment and could really change the quality of life in the country's capital. He went on to say that what he envisages is nearly all of the vehicles that are running in Central London during working hours are to be low emission. He explained that this would definitely ensure an incredible increase in the quality of air and will also stimulate deliveries and mass usage of lower emission technologies.

Johnson is hoping that these plans will encourage even more manufacturers in the motor industry to look into developing a lot more efficient vehicles and will also increase the public to take up a machine like that.

The Mayor also explained his intentions to save businesses up to 350 million by looking into the way phase five of the current low emission zone proposals will come into force. The changes mean that phase five will actually only apply to Transport of London's buses fleet, which supposedly is the main accountant for air pollution in that zone.
Originally, all buses, coaches and HGV's would have had to comply. In defence of the changes that will be made Boris Johnson explained that numbers of hybrid buses in London will be increased and this move is said to exceed original phase five targets by up to 200 per cent.

Other plans to tackle London air quality announced this week included a brand new fund to try and improve air pollution hot spots in the capital and the start of a study into how feasible a zero emission taxi for London will be for the future.
