Do you want back your cars space?  Well one simple solution is to build a shed for all those lawn and garden tools taking up space in your garage.  You need to learn how to build a shed step by step.

You'll be able to build a good shed much cheaper than the overpriced ready-made sheds you can buy these days.

There was a time, when a family who needed a building simply could not afford to pay for labor and materials. If people wanted to get things done they did it with their own sweat and labor. Today's economic woes have many of us looking for solutions our grandparents might have thought of first.

Do-it-yourself projects like shed building are fast becoming the way things are done today.

Experience the joy of creating something with your own two hands!  The feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment when you stand back and look at what you have built with your own hands is a great experience.

All right.  Lets get started.  We're going to learn how to build a shed step by step.

Step One

The first thing we need to do is determine how large our shed needs to be.  There are many options.  I would recommend that you gather the items you intend to store in the shed.  Now we can see just how must space we'll require to store these items.  An example might be a 10x10 shed.

Step Two

Now we need to have plans or blue prints for the shed we will build.  This will give us the instructions we need.  There are many great shed plans out there.  You can even find the plans you'll need, right here on the Internet.

Step Three

Contact your local planning and zoning commission to determine if you'll need to get a permit to build you new shed.  Many areas allow up to a 120 sqft without requiring a building permit.  Temporary buildings also do not generally require a building permit.

Step Four

Now we need to determine the location of our shed.  A clear flat location is best.

Step Five

Ok now we get to decide what type of foundation we'll use for our shed.  There are many to choose from.  One option would be to pour a concrete pad.  Your plans should recommend the best foundation for the size of you shed.

Step Six

The flooring comes next.  Pressure treated wood is very important to use.  It will protect your shed from moisture and prolong the life of your shed.  Don't forget to square your corners.  You'll definitely be glad that you did on the next step.

Step Seven

Building the walls is next.  It's much easier to build the wall on a flat level surface, then raise it into position and brace it.  Do this with each wall.  Then you can square them up and nail them together.

Step Eight

The roof is the next step.  There are many different types of roofs based on the style of shed plans you have chosen.  Look to your plans for information about the placing of rafters and beams.

Step Nine

Finally we are to the final touches such as paint and trim.  At this point we might even want to build a few shelves inside our new shed to make organization easy.

Wow, learning to build a shed step by step wasn't as hard as we thought it would be.  All we really needed was a great set of plans to build our shed.  Guess what, we've not only taken back our garage, but we've added value to our home.  You sure can't beat that.  I can't wait to get to the next project.
