Why Live in Edinburgh?

Edinburgh, Scotland's capital is a city that has constantly been nominated by prestigious newspapers and magazines, such as The Guardian, Conde Naste and The Observer, as 'Favourite UK City' and regularly appears in lists of top cities to visit worldwide.
Located in the south east of Scotland, Edinburgh is a city that is steeped in history; something which is apparent from the moment you arrive and begin looking around the town centre.
Edinburgh castle forms a picturesque centrepiece, perched atop a dormant volcano the castle looks down over the whole of the city and provides and exemplary example of the historic and medieval architecture that is to be found throughout the cities old town.
Walking down the Royal Mile (and many of the tiny winding closes leading off from it) can feel like stepping back in time, and many tours will take visitors into some of the long forgotten closes and streets.
Compared to many cities Edinburgh feels incredibly open and spacious.
This is primarily due to the lack of tall buildings and the prevalence of green spaces throughout the city; from the Meadows and Bruntsfield Links to Princes Street gardens, Inverleith Park and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Edinburgh is also surrounded by 7 hills (The Pentlands, Braids, Craiglochart, Corstorphine, Blackford, Calton and Arthurs Seat) meaning that hills are visible from almost anywhere in the city.
All of this combines to give Edinburgh a small town feel with all of the benefits of living in a city.
Edinburgh has a relatively large student population.
The city boasts four notable universities which attract a range of students from a huge variety of cultures and backgrounds.
Edinburgh's cultural status is further enhanced by the numerous, infamous festivals that it plays host to every year.
The Edinburgh International Festival and Fringe is the centrepiece attracting hundreds of thousands of tourists to the city every August.
The festival brings an enormous amount of theatre, comedy and live music to the city and creates an electric atmosphere.
For all of these reasons Edinburgh is an incredible city to live in; its culture is diverse, historic and exciting and its small size means the centre can be walked around with ease.
All of this adds up to make Edinburgh one of my favourite cities in the world.
