Neurologic Disease in HIV-HTLV Coinfection
Neurologic Disease in HIV-HTLV Coinfection
This is the Medscape Neurology Minute. I am Dr. Alan Jacobs. Researchers from the Laboratório de Pesquisa Clínica em Neuroinfecção at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Rio de Janeiro have reported a case series examining the risk for neurologic diseases in HIV-positive individuals coinfected with the human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV). In looking at 428 HIV-positive individuals, 47 were coinfected with HTLV (10.9%). Coinfection was an independent variable associated with neurologic outcome with an odds ratio of 8.73. Coinfection was associated with myelopathy, peripheral neuropathy, and hepatitis C virus infection. Highly active antiretroviral therapy did not appear to protect against neurologic diseases and had no effect on HTLV proviral load. This study was selected from Medscape's Practice-Changing Articles in Neurology. I'm Dr. Alan Jacobs.
