How to Travel Abroad With a Laptop
- 1). Verify that the voltage and frequency of your laptop's power supply match the standards of the destination country. The power supply's voltage information can be found directly on the power supply itself, while power standards for each country can be found online at www.voltagevalet.com. If the power supply voltage and the destination country's standards do not match, you will need to purchase a voltage converter, which can be found at most electronics stores.

Verify that your laptop's power supply has the appropriate type of plug for the destination country. If it does not, you will need an adapter, which can be purchased at any electronics store, and even most airports. Universal adapters are recommended because they are easy to find and can convert from any standard plug type to any other standard plug type. - 3). Carry your laptop with you at all times while in transit to avoid damage or theft. It is never a good idea to pack a laptop into a suitcase or, even worse, a duffel bag. If flying, be prepared to remove your laptop from its case while passing through security checkpoints. The security guards will let you know if this is necessary or not.
- 4). Plug your laptop power supply first into the voltage converter, if necessary, and then into the adapter, if necessary, once you are in the destination country. Wait a minute or two to see if the power supply gets abnormally hot before plugging your laptop into the power supply. If it does get abnormally hot, unplug everything and consider consulting an electronics store to see if you need to purchase a different voltage converter.
