How to Check a Person's Background
- 1). Collect two identifying pieces of information about the person you're investigating. Ideally this would be his name and the addresses where he's lived for at least seven years. Additional information such as his date of birth and places of employment help narrow your search results.
- 2). Go online to the websites of the states he's lived in. Most states allow individuals to conduct criminal history searches online. Virginia, for example, has a special section on its website for background checks. There is a processing fee, though not all states charge, such as Maryland.
- 3). Visit the Free Public Records Directory to find resources by state. Be careful when visiting this site. Clicking on the states will take you to free state websites, but typing a name into the search field will take you to an outside, paying site.
- 4). Check the national sex offender registry. Those with a criminal history involving sex crimes, including child pornography and attempted rape, are required by law to register. A photograph of the person is available, along with aliases and his crime.
