Starting an online business on the web is quite an undertaking. Most owners do not know what this really entails. That home business idea is really good, but what now? What do I do now?

Working on the internet is a lot different for any stay at home mom or the business owner with lots of physical stores. Most of the time, a person's first experience with the computer consists of one of two things. They may play games to get used to using a mouse and forget how uncomfortable they were with the computer. An item that is embarassing to purchase may be found on the web in the privacy of your own home. Many business owners are clueless about the web.

The first and one of the most important terms to learn is search engine. Looking up a particular phrase is how many new users start experiencing the web. Yahoo and Google may be terms they are familiar with. Ask Jeeves and Yahoo are just two of the web's search engines. Search engines are in competition with one another. Ever noticed all the ads on the sides of the search engine results? And that the first entries of your search are a different color and state they are paid results? There is a lot of competition to obtain those spots. It may cost megabucks to be that first search entry result. You will need to find what your customers will type when they go to access a search engine. Find the terms and you will know how and which results to advertise on.

Sounds easy enough. But it takes a lot to locate the winning combination for your search results. So you find what you feel is the best word search combination. Then you apply to purchase ads there. You would not believe how much that one phrase can cost. So you go back and try other combinations. The winning one will be the one that ends up making the most sales for you. And the research data on the ad will be there for you. And now you have a new friend called a search engine.

Google, Bing and Yahoo are just three of the many engines available out there on the web to search with. If you go to one and type in any phrase, you may get very different results on all of them. And they are very competitive. Don't just use one of them - try all of them when doing your research.
