Strengths:
  • Incredible size and arm strength
  • Improved his accuracy, touch, and decision making considerably as a junior.
  • Throws a nice deep ball
  • A pocket passer who moves around well between the tackles

  • Reads defenses well and does a good job picking up his second and third options
  • Plays with a lot of passion and confidence
  • Has room to get even better with solid coaching

Weaknesses:
  • Inconsistent footwork
  • Slower-than-desired release delivery and release
  • Needs to learn to lead his receivers better
  • Not real mobile
  • Doesn't throw well on the run
  • Will have to adjust to playing under center more in the NFL

Bottom Line on Ryan Mallett:

Ryan Mallet, who threw 60 touchdown passes to just 18 interceptions over the last two years, is an intriguing prospect. He's still a little raw, but has made great strides in his mechanics, touch, and accuracy. There are still some concerns about his game, but he is a physical specimen with a huge arm.

Projection: Because of his physical attributes and potential, Mallett could go as high as the top ten. In my opinion, there are several options that would be less risky with just as much upside. But at the least, even if he slides on draft day, he will be picked up somewhere in the first round.
