How to Clean Silverware and Silver Cutlery
Sparkly, clean silverware always makes a good impression on guests. Follow these steps to get your silver tableware ready for a special meal.
Before beginning with the cleaning, determine which process you would prefer to clean your silverware. One way is to gently cleanse your silverware while the other method is more effective and great for getting rid of particularly stubborn marks on silverware.
For the first option, add one part milk to two parts water in a basin. For every 12 ounces of water used, add one tablespoon of vinegar and stir. Allow silverware to soak in the mixture for several hours or even overnight. Follow it with a rinse under warm water and dry with a soft cloth.Another more powerful cleaning method, is to line a pan with aluminum foil and fill it halfway with tepid or warm water. Add a teaspoon or two of baking soda and soak silverware in the solution for 5 to 10 minutes. Keep an eye on your silverware, so you know when the stains have been removed. Rinse silverware in warm water and allow the pieces to air-dry. Once dry, rub them gently with a soft and clean cloth to remove any water marks.
After you have cleaned your silverware, proceed to cleaning your cutlery. Here are some tips to keep your silver cutlery clean.
After a meal, use a soft dishcloth or a sponge and hand wash your cutlery in warm soapy water. Follow it with a rinse and dry with a soft cloth. If your silver cutlery is only lightly tarnished, rub it with a chamois, a jeweler's cloth or silver mitts. This is the easiest, quickest way to shine it up.
If the cutlery is slightly tarnished, clean it with the help of baking soda. Rub on a paste of baking soda and water using a sponge or toothbrush. Rinse, then dry and polish with a soft cloth. You can also use cornstarch instead of baking soda.
For more tarnished silver cutlery, simmer 2 cups of water. Stir in 2 teaspoons of baking soda and drop in a 6-inch (or larger) piece of aluminum foil. Submerge the cutlery for about 15 minutes, rinse off and rub dry.
