How to Tell If a Goat Has a Temperature
- 1). Lubricate the end of the thermometer with petroleum jelly. This makes it easier to insert the thermometer.
- 2). Shake the thermometer up and down to ensure that the mercury is settled in the bottom bulb of the thermometer. If you are using a digital thermometer yo can skip this step as it is ready to read a temperature once turned on.
- 3). Insert the thermometer 2 1/2 inches into the goat's rectum.
- 4). Hold the thermometer in place for 2 minutes; this gives the thermometer enough time to give an accurate reading. If you are using a digital thermometer, a beep will sound when the reading time is complete.
- 5). Remove the thermometer from the goat and note the temperature reading.
- 6). Wipe the thermometer down with an alcohol wipe after each use to sterilize it.
