About Hydration Packs

    Function

    • Hydration packs are used to stay hydrated. A hydration system is built into a pack, which is most often a backpack or waist pack (fanny pack). It is a reservoir (bladder) of liquids, which is carried and consumed "hands free." The liquids are drank through a hose that is connected to the reservoir. The liquids are held in the hose most often with a valve known as a "bite valve." This valve is released when a person applies pressure (bites down) on it.

    Types

    • The two main categories of hydration packs are back and waist packs, but they are available in hand-held types too. The differences range from the large selection of styles, colors, weight, additional features and sizes available in each type. Some styles are specially designed to be used for a specific activity such as cycling. The amount of liquid a hydration pack holds varies from 28 oz. to 100 oz.

    Features

    • Hydration packs contain a reservoir that can be removed from the pack. It can be cleaned and filled through a secured opening. This reservoir is placed inside a protective fabric casing that often has additional storage pockets. The hose is usually held in place with straps or clips. The hydration packs are secured to the user with adjustable straps.

    Considerations

    • It will depend on the activity involved as to which specific hydration pack would be best suited for it. This must be the first consideration, followed by the cost. The size and other available options must be considered as well. Additional options could include ice packs or additional insulation, extra pockets or bottles, easy cleaning, filters and others.

    Misconceptions

    • Some people call hydration packs "camel backs." This is from the brand name CamelBak that is the generic trademark of hydration packs. CamelBak is a company recognized for the most part for their high quality hydration packs. Other major brands include High Sierra, JanSport, GoPro, Kelty and Ultimate Direction (see Resources below).
