How to Transfer Title to Revocable Trust
- 1). Identify whether the property requires a document of title or some other ownership document. For example, cars, real estate and some financial accounts require documents of title, while home furnishings, jewelry and gold do not require documents of title.
- 2). List the property on the trust schedule attached to your trust documents.
- 3). If the property does not require a document of title, prepare a simple document called an assignment of property. This document should briefly state what property you are transferring to the trust and the date the transfer is effective, and you should sign this document and keep it with your trust documents.
- 4). If your property requires a document of title, you need to prepare and sign formal conveyance documents. For real estate, you will need to prepare a deed from you to your trust, and for other property like cars and boats, you need to prepare a bill of sale to your trust.
- 5). If you are transferring real estate, you need to have the deed recorded in the county recorder's office for the county in which the real estate is located.
