Now your new puppy is living with you your life is not the same anymore.
Puppies bring lots of fun and happiness, you cheer up at once when a puppy comes up to greet you.
Her soft coat, sweet face, big eyes and loving nature enhance you and brighten up your day.
Puppies are so lovely, they touch our hearts and this is why so many people are attracted to them.
But, as always, there is a backside to a puppies charm.
Puppies chew.
They chew on anything they can get, they don't mind if it is your favourite shoe, tabel leg or leather belt.
Chewing can be a very annoying and expensive puppy feature as anyone who ever brought up a dog will tell you.
  • Is there anything you can do to stop your puppy chewing? No.
  • Should you stop your pup's chewing habit? Equally No.
Puppies need to chew.
They need to develop strong gums and jaw muscles in order to grow into healthy dogs.
Chewing is an instinct driven behavior in dogs.
This instinct made sure that a young dog would be able to feed on a typical dog diet as nature provided it.
Dogs are carnivores, they feed on meat, offal and bones.
They need strong teeth and jaw muscles to do so.
Another reason for your pup's urge to chew is this: When your puppy gets into her teething stage, which is when she drops her milk teeth and her adult teeth come out at roughly the age of four to six month, she needs something to chew on to help with the process.
The same applies to human babies who need something to chew on to help break the gums so the new teeth can come out.
In a nutshell: Chewing is part of a puppy's set up and the best you as a loving owner can do is to accommodate this inborn desire.
The less you get upset about it, the better.
Provide him with the opportunity to chew on things which are safe to be chewed on.
Take unsuitable chewing objects from him and exchange them for something better as you take them away.
Keep all valuable objects out of the reach of your canine child and block access to furniture legs etc.
Give him something he can chew on like a good old beef bone of a size he can handle.
Make sure that objects you offer do not splinter and that he can not chew parts off them.
Plastic toys are unsuitable because they do contain toxins which may be harmful and a vigorous pup can bite pieces off and swallow them which maybe very dangerous.
Cardboard boxes, the cardboard of kitchen rolls and suchlike may provide some chewing opportunity as well as some special chew on products you may buy at your local pet shop.
Rawhide bones may not be such a good idea after all because puppy can destroy them and swallow unsuitable pieces which may cause trouble inside your pet.
One last word of caution: If you allow your dog to chew on old shoes you may find him chewing on your new shoes as well.
A dog does not have any idea about the difference between an old worn out shoe and a "good" shoe.
