How to Write a Check by Phone
- 1). Call your creditor with your checkbook in hand. Find out whether the company can accept a check over the phone. Also, ask if there is a fee associated with using a check over the telephone.
- 2). Give the person the information printed on the upper left corner of the check. Usually this is your name, your spouse's name, if applicable, your address and your telephone number. In some cases, the creditor will ask for additional information, such as your drivers' license number.
- 3). Locate the routing number on the bottom of your check. This tells the creditor which bank you use. The routing number is always nine digits long and is in the lower left corner on a personal checking account check. For business accountd, the routing number is sometimes in the middle of the bottom of the check. Give that number to the person on the phone.
- 4). Find your account number. This number will follow the nine-digit routing number on a personal check or will be the other number on the bottom of a business check. This ensures that the funds come out of the proper account at your bank. Give this number to the creditor.
- 5). Give the creditor the check number. This is located in the upper right corner of your check, and is also repeated after your account number at the bottom of your check. Once you use this check number, you should void your check. Write the word "void" across the front and the back of the check, tear it and up and dispose of it.
- 6). Write down the confirmation number that your creditor gives you, if any. This reference number will help the creditor to locate your payment information if you have any problem with the payment later.
