How to Replace the String in a Weed Trimmer

    • 1). Remove the spool on the weed trimmer's head. Depending on the trimmer model, the spool may simply twist off, or you may need to depress a button or use a screwdriver to loosen the spool. Remove any excess string wrapped around the spool.

    • 2). Cut a loose end of the new string at a 45-degree angle, using scissors. Insert the angled end into the starter hole near the base of the spool. This will hold the string in place as you wind it around the spool.

    • 3). Search the spool for an arrow indicating which direction you should wind the string. For most weed trimmers, this is counterclockwise, though many models have an arrow to guide you.

    • 4). Wind the string around the spool tightly in the appropriate direction. Wind it in neat rows, avoiding kinks, bends or twists. Careful winding will help the weed trimmer effectively feed the line. Stop winding when you get about 6 inches from the end of the line.

    • 5). Snap the string into the retainer, which is a small niche in the spool. This will hold the line firmly in place while you reattach the spool.

    • 6). Feed the end of the new string through the eyelet in the trimmer's head. When the string is secured through the eyelet, detach it from the spool retainer. Replace the spool on the trimmer head.
