How to Fix the Red Circle on an XBox 360 Step-by-Step

    • 1). Turn off your Xbox 360 and disconnect everything from it. Disconnect the A/V cables connecting it to the TV, any of the cables connecting it to controllers, any USB devices you've plugged into it, and even the hard drive, which you can remove by pressing the button on the top of the console. The only thing you should leave the console plugged into is the power.

    • 2). Turn the console on and wait for it to boot up. If a minute elapses without the red ring reappearing, turn off the console, plug everything back in, and turn it on again. If the red ring reappears, move on to Step 3.

    • 3). Go to the Xbox 360 support website's Flashing Lights Solution Wizard (see Resources) and answer the on-screen questions to receive a long series of instructions customized to your specific problem. The instructions will involve things such as checking your power supply, checking your A/V connections and running tests on various components of your system. If any of these solves your problem, the red ring will disappear; otherwise, you should send your console into Microsoft.

    • 4). Call Xbox Support at (800) 469-9269, or e-mail the support desk using the online interface (see Resources). If you call, have your console in front of you and be prepared to answer questions about it. Explain the steps you've already taken, and try anything else the support representative tells you. If the console really is dead, the representative will tell you how to send it into Microsoft for a replacement.
