My Remote Desktop Won't Connect

    • 1). Ensure that the remote computer you are trying to connect to has an active Internet connection. If the system is not connected to the Internet with a wireless or Ethernet adapter, the Remote Desktop connection will fail.

    • 2). Open the Start menu on the remote computer, right-click "My Computer" in Windows XP or "Computer" in Windows Vista and 7 and then select "Properties."

    • 3). Go to the "Remote" tab in Windows XP or click the "Remote Settings" link in Windows Vista and 7.

    • 4). Click the check box next to "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer" in Windows XP. If you are using Windows Vista or 7, select the radio button next to "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop." Then press "OK" to save the settings.

    • 5). Open the Start menu again and click "Control Panel."

    • 6). Double-click "Windows Firewall" and go to the "Exceptions" tab in Windows XP or click the "Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall" link in Windows Vista and 7.

    • 7). Place a check mark next to "Remote Desktop" and click "OK" to instruct the Windows Firewall to not block Remote Desktop attempts.

    • 8). Open the Start menu, right-click "My Computer" or "Computer" again and choose the "Manage" option.

    • 9). Go to the "Services" tab on the left side of the window.

      Set the "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)" or "Terminal Services" entries to "Automatic."
