How to Start an At-Home Business in Georgia
- 1). Determine the product you wish to sell. Some products are subject to sales and use tax in Georgia.
- 2). Visit the Department of Revenue Tax Center Information website (see Resources). From the jump page, click the link beneath the paragraph explaining sales and use tax labeled "Click here." Review the list, then click "Register my new Georgia business."
- 3). Enter your business type under the drop-down menu. If you are running your business with no employees or partners, you can select "Individual" to simplify your filing until you are ready to grow your business. The "Individual" account type is synonymous with "Sole proprietor." Alternatively, if your home-based business is more complex in structure, an LLC or C corporation may be more appropriate. Finalize your decision to incorporate with a licensed attorney.
- 4). Enter your Social Security number and your fictitious name filing. Your "fictitious name" is the name of your company when registering as a sole proprietor. When registering as a corporation, you should enter the name of your corporation in this space.
- 5). Type in your legal name in the spaces provided. Then your mailing address and contact information. Click "Next." On the next screen, you will be asked if your mailing address is the same as your business operating address; click "Yes." Then click "Next."
- 6). Enter the date you want your home-based business to become effective. Click "Next." Select the types of tax accounts that apply to your business: Sales and Use Tax and Payroll Withholding Tax. Choose "Sales and Use Tax." Click "Next." You will be prompted to apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) with the IRS. Follow the prompts to obtain your EIN number. This number is required to file a business tax return each year.
- 7). Click "Finish" to submit your information to the Department of Revenue.
