Styles of Wedding Photography

When you're looking at styles of wedding photography, there are really only two of them: traditional wedding photography and photojournalistic wedding photography. There isn't a whole lot of difference in the equipment used, but the technique and approach to each style varies greatly.

Which style you choose really depends on three key things: how much time you have outside of the ceremony and planned activities to set up, what kind of photos you want for a wedding album or scrapbook or to send to relatives, and your personal taste in a wedding theme or location for your big day.

Traditional Wedding Photography

The traditional style of wedding photography is focused on posed portraits and high quality, pre-planned pictures. You'll get the wedding shots exactly to your satisfaction, and have a lot more control when it comes to location, guests involved, and poses.

On the other hand, it takes more time to get everyone together and set up for a posed shot, as well as the some stress people may experience in standing for a formal picture and moving things around. Your pictures will also look like they were set up, like a photo shoot rather than a wedding.

You want a traditional photographer if:

- You have time for setting up shots
- You know what kinds of pictures you want
- You want posed portraits of everyone's best dress

Photojournalistic Wedding Photography

The photojournalistic style of wedding photography is where the photographer follows the bride and groom through their big day. They take pictures before the ceremony when everyone is getting ready, during the ceremony, the receiving line, and the reception. These photographs will be less forced, more spontaneous, and you won't need to interrupt planned activities to stand for a picture.

The downside is you can't control what the photographer takes pictures of, but your wedding will be captured as it happens, in a natural, storybook fashion. You'll get photographs of guests interacting, and activities as they unfold with candid, emotional moments.

You want a photojournalistic photographer if:

- You don't have time for posed, set-up shots
- You want an energetic, realistic look to your photos
- You want pictures of everyone in their best dress, being themselves

Whichever style of photography you decide on, make sure it fits with what your vision for you wedding album is. The pictures you'll get will create a lasting, loved memory of your big day, and you'll want it done right.
