How to Get My Newborns to Sleep When Laying Them Down
- 1). Establish a bedtime routine for your newborns. Put them to bed at the same time each day so their internal clocks adjust and get used to it. Give your babies a bath before bedtime, massage lotion onto their skin and rock them, before putting them down. Your nighttime ritual will calm your babies down, making it easier for them to fall asleep.
- 2). Play soft bedtime music for your babies. Soft music, such as traditional lullabies, soothe babies and help them fall asleep even when they are in an unfamiliar environment. Your babies will associate the music to bedtime. White noise, such as the sound of a fan, is an alternative that can also calm babies down and lull them to sleep.
- 3). Put your babies in the same crib. According to the Baby Center website, close physical contact calms babies. Allow your babies to cuddle and fall asleep together up until they are approximately 3 months of age or until they start moving their limbs and waking each other up.
- 4). Wrap your newborns in light blankets. Swaddling your babies resembles their time in the womb. Your babies feel secure, safe and can easily fall asleep. Avoid wrapping the blankets too tightly because you don't want to cut off their circulation. Use your T-shirts as an alternative because your scent on the shirts soothes your babies.
- 5). Incorporate the Ferber method when laying your babies down to sleep. This method, developed by pediatrician Richard Ferber, encourages parents to let their babies soothe themselves to sleep. Lay your babies in their crib during bedtime. Pat them if they cry, but don't pick them up. Leave the room. If they keep crying, walk in and pat them again before leaving the room. Increase the length of time that you stay out of the babies' room, over time. Allow your babies to cry themselves to sleep.
