    Phoenix Sonoran Preserve

    • Wildlife enthusiasts take trips every year to the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve to observe the state's bird, the cactus wren. Rare species that are protected from extinction by the state government are seen here also. Among these are the Gila monster which is a colorful, venomous lizard that grows up to 24 inches long. Another deadly reptile indigenous to the desert is the western diamondback rattlesnake, which may be spotted at over seven feet in length. Adventurous explorers might see deadly nocturnal creatures like the scorpion or gray fox. Coyotes may also be heard howling. Many animals live on the preserve that look like other animals but are a species unto themselves. These include the pig-like javelina and the cat-like ringtail.

    North Mountain Hiking

    • Vacationers who enjoy serenity may visit Phoenix's North Mountain on the designated Silent Sunday of the month. On those days, only hikers and bicyclers are allowed to use the roadways. Beginner-level hikers are surrounded by natural beauty on the Penny Howe Barrier Free trail, the Maxine Lakin Nature trail, the Charles M. Christiansen Memorial trail and the North Mountain Connector. Moderate and advanced-level hikers enjoy steeper slopes on the mountain's Lookout Mountain Connector, the North Mountain National trail, Shaw Butte and the Lookout Mountain Circumference trail.

    Papago Park Baseball

    • Fans of the professional baseball team, the Oakland Athletics, may visit Phoenix's Papago Park baseball facility to watch players practice year-round. This facility is also known as the Phoenix Municipal Stadium. This is where the minor Fall Instructional League and the Arizona Rookie League hone their skills for the majors. Papago Park also hosts the state's baseball playoffs and other tournaments. Spectators also enjoy panoramic views of the expansive Papago Hills.

    Points of Pride

    • Phoenix first-timers may tour the city's points of pride. Visitors who enjoy being pampered on vacations may delight in a haunt of celebrities and U.S. presidents, the Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa. At the right time of year, tickets to performance art are available for shows at the Cricket Pavilion or Orpheum Theater.
