Remove Old Mail from the KMail Trash Automatically

The trash folder in KMail is great.

The cats often delete mail I still want by walking over the keyboard furiously (or intentionally?). Sometimes, I even move a message to the trash myself that I want to recover later.

But having to empty the trash now and then is tedious, even if it means only a few clicks. I tend to forget to do it, and then the trash grows to unmanageable proportions.

Fortunately, KMail can do the cleanup automatically for me, and for you, too.

You can tell KMail to remove old messages from the trash automatically after a certain, configurable time.

To expire old mail from the KMail trash automatically:
  • Click on the trash folder with the right mouse button.
  • Select Properties... from the context menu that comes up.
  • Make sure Expire old messages in this folder is selected.
  • Define a time after which read and unread messages will expire.
    • Expiring both read and unread mail after 3 weeks works fine for me.
  • Click OK.

Note that old message expiration doesn't happen automatically (you have to select File | Expire All Folders from the menu) -- unless you tell KMail to do it when you quit.
