What to Do When Caught Driving Without Insurance
- Fines for uninsured driving vary from state to state. Nearly every state has penalties for driving without insurance, and many of the fines are very steep. If you are pulled over and do not have insurance, you will receive a ticket specifying a court date. Purchase an insurance policy before that date, and you can show the judge that although you did not have insurance at the time of the offense, you do now. This will reduce the amount of the fine in most cases, especially if it is a first offense.
- Depending on the circumstances, a lawyer may be able to have driving without insurance charges reduced or dropped. These types of cases are most successful if you are operating another person's vehicle and were unaware that it was uninsured or if you can prove that you were not aware of the insurance requirements in your state.
- If you are found guilty of driving without insurance, pay any fines assessed to you by the court. If you are unable to pay the total amount, many courts will allow for a payment plan. The penalties for ignoring fines can be even worse than the original penalty, and may include charges of contempt of court, additional fines, driver's license revocation or suspension and jail time.
