How to Drive the Alaska Highway
- 1). Select travel dates. Peak season in Alaska lasts from late June through early September. You will encounter the best road conditions during this time, although larger towns may be crowded. Winter driving is not recommended unless you are extremely experienced in snow and ice.
- 2). Choose a vehicle. A camper or motor home can save money on motels, although in the warmer months, tent camping is also a possibility. Any vehicle, even a motorcycle, can make the journey, provided it is in top shape. Flying to Seattle and renting a vehicle is a popular option.
- 3). Plan your route. Officially, the Alaska Highway, also known as the AlCan, stretches from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, to Delta Junction, Alaska. Several smaller highways connect to portions of the route, allowing access to even more remote sections of Canada and Alaska. The major tourist destination of Fairbanks is 98 miles north of Delta Junction, making the full distance from Dawson Creek to Fairbanks 1,488 miles.
- 4). Have your vehicle thoroughly inspected. All fluids, tires, alignment and other details must be in top shape before you begin your trip.
- 5). Assemble an emergency kit. Although gas stations are available every 50 to 100 miles, mechanics are harder to find. Carry a flashlight with extra batteries, a lug wrench, a sturdy tire jack and two full-size spare tires. A sleeping bag, a small cache of food and good rain gear can make your travels more comfortable.
- 6). Allow plenty of time. Driving the Alaska Highway is an adventure. Road construction, slow drivers and unexpected sightseeing detours may add significantly to the length of your trip. Plan to spend at least a week in each direction, or longer if you plan to sightsee, hike or camp.
- 7). Enjoy the journey. The Alaska Highway is unlike any route available in the Lower 48. Take time out to stop in family-owned diners, take photos of native wildlife and talk with local residents. Although your destination may be Fairbanks, on the Alaska Highway, getting there is truly half the fun.
