The 1996 Cadillac STS has only two recalls listed: fuel rail fracturing and analog instrument cluster defect. These problems affect the Cadillac STS throughout a few years, including 1996. When you have a recall, the dealership remedies the problem at no charge to you. As soon as you learn of a recall on your STS, you should bring it to the dealership to have that part repaired, even if you are not having a problem with the part. - Some of the 1996 Seville STS vehicles with V-8 LD8 and V-8 L37 engines use nylon tubing in the fuel rail. This nylon tubing degrades and eventually cracks, causing a fire hazard, as it allows fuel to leak into the engine compartment. Heat generated by the engine or sparks generated from metal hitting metal or a stone getting kicked up into the engine compartment could ignite the leaking fuel.
The dealership installs a stainless steel fuel rail assembly. According to Recall Number NHTSA04V110000, the dealership should also replace the chassis fuel return line. Cadillac began to notify consumers of the problem in May of 2004. - The Seville STS instrument panel cluster tends to short out. The short disrupts the pass key system, which causes the instrument panel to fail and could cause a no-start condition. If this happens while you are driving, the instrument panel goes blank, the gauges stop working and most "dummy lights" or tell-tale indicators stop working. This does not affect the ABS, SIR, parking brake and service engine soon lights, but it affects the seat belt light, turn signals, high-beam light, hazards, the oil pressure and coolant temperature lights. The dealership will replace the instrument panel cluster free of charge if your 1996 Seville STS is one of the recalled vehicles.
- The quick reference cards recall is bulletin number 41-01-02C and does not affect the consumer in that it does not affect the vehicle directly. Cadillac distributes six product recall campaign quick reference cards to service advisers and service writers at dealerships. Service personnel use the cards as a guide for checking the 1996 Cadillac Seville STS when it comes in for a recall or for service. The service personnel check the card and compare it to the under-hood GM Campaign Identification Label to determine if that particular Cadillac STS is eligible for the free recall work.
