Two Former Beauty Queens Compete on Survivor Redemption Island

CBS recently announced the cast for their upcoming season of Survivor, which is subtitled "Redemption Island".
The running theme of Redemption will be apparent through the new season.
Two of the competitors seeking redemption will be Ashley Underwood and Krista Klumpp.
These two ladies are former pageant competitors that will initially compete against each other on opposing tribes.
During the spring of 2011, we will be able to see how these former beauty queens handle living without mirrors, sleeping on the ground, and competing in physically draining challenges.
Ashley Underwood Ashley Underwood is the beauty queen that will compete on Ometepe.
She was Miss Maine in 2009, but did not make the finals in the Miss USA pageant.
When not competing in pageants or surviving in Nicaragua, she works as a school nurse.
While this doesn't look like the makings of a strong competitor, there is more to Miss Underwood than just a pretty face.
She is a strong basketball player, receiving a full-ride basketball scholarship to attend the University of Maine.
After graduating from college, she played professional basketball in Europe for a season.
She gave up her job playing basketball to compete in the Miss Maine USA contest.
Her strength will help her do well in challenges, while her good looks and beauty pageant status could possibly cause her tribemates to underestimate her and keep her around until it is too late.
Krista Klumpp Krista Klumpp is also a former beauty pageant contestant looking for redemption, competing on the Zapatera tribe.
She competed in the Miss Alabama and Miss Alabama USA pageants as a teenager, but did not get as far as Ashley Underwood.
Her biggest claim to fame is not in the world of beauty pageants, but in the world of cheerleading.
She now works as a pharmaceutical rep, as former winner Natalie White did.
College cheerleading can be pretty competitive and take a lot of strength and dexterity.
These qualities should help her do well in challenges.
Just like Underwood, Klumpp's status as a former cheerleader could cause other people to underestimate her.
She will probably stick around for quite a while.
It is not apparent that Underwood and Klumpp knew each other prior to competing against each other on Survivor.
Although they both competed in pageants, Klumpp did not go to the national level in the pageant world, and it is unlikely that they knew each other before.
CBS might choose to make a big deal out of their beauty pageant rivalry, considering the redemption theme of the season and the fact that they both come from similar backgrounds.
