The Magic of Sqiudoo

Squidoo launched in December 2005, and the man behind the idea is Seth Godin, a well-known author of several marketing and business books, and the authoritative figure in marketing concepts and ideas for small businesses. Squidoo, a social networking site similar to MySpace, is a very clever play on single point: highly focused, passion driven content. Squidoo can also be an excellent advertising platform if you do it right using the appropriate keywords and tags.

Although still a relatively new site with less than sixty thousand members, Squidoo is actually one of the Top 700 sites in the world and every Squidoo page you make gets listed into search engines quickly and easily. Interestingly, Squidoo is actually similar to a search engine, such as Google, but, according to founder Seth Godin, it acts as an intermediary to search engines by giving people the "big picture" view on a given topic.

On Squidoo you do not have a "space" or profile. Instead you have what is called a "lens." A "lens' is simply a page with information about a certain topic. Lenses tend to be easily indexed by search engine. Lenses that I built a little over 2 months ago, for example, already have PRs of 4 and 10. Once you create your first lens you are referred to as a lensmasters. Lenses have the potential to earn money from affiliate sales and distributed AdSense revenue; Squidoo splits the royalties up publicly, with the "lensmaster" getting 50% (in cash or nonprofit donation) and charity getting a straight 5%. Lenses help their finders get a perspective they cannot get from computer-selected (and often irrelevant) search results.

Lensmasters share their knowledge and expertise, gain recognition for doing so, and can build traffic for their other online ventures as well. Several of my lenses have reached the top 100 of Squidoo, and one hit #1 and stayed there for 8 days in a row. After being live for just 30 days one of my lenses made Lens of the Day, ranked #36 overall, ranked #3 in Animals and Nature, and became a PR3.

You can create as many lenses as you want, be it for personal reasons or for business use. You can actually use Squidoo to do all of the following: 1) expand your affiliate marketing business, 2) build huge lists of subscribers, 3) generate an awesome amount of targeted traffic to websites, 4) top rankings in Google for highly competitive keywords. No matter what of internet home business you are involved in, everyone's dream ticket is a first page ranking in Google's search results.

Everybody from the hobby enthusiast to the business person is now recognizing the power that Squidoo provides to connect with others who share their interests or might be potential customers. Every lens carries Adsense ads that are shared with the individual publishers and charities. This is especially true, given that Squidoo divides AdSense profits based on traffic, not AdSense clicks (a lot of Squidoo's "content" is just blank pages, something Google pretends to frown upon).

It takes a motivated community to provide the content that is needed for Squidoo, but anyone can consume the content produced from its community (in the same way that anyone can consume content from About or Wikipedia. The main reason Squidoo is effective stems from its vibrant online community who constantly creating diverse quality, content and links. In the process, the Squidoo community has made Squidoo a search engine haven. Squidoo is just one of many things you can do to improve the traffic you get. Starting a lens at Squidoo is very easy to do and can quickly enhance your existing online income.
