A Nice Place to Stay can make or Break your Internship Abroad
Accommodation options for interns abroad include backpackers hostels, shared apartments, private apartments, home stay and work based accommodation. These provide varying opportunities to socialize and have your privacy.
People often make friends for life during their time abroad. Staying with other interns will enable you to share your experiences in your host country and meet people from all over the world. You will also be able to go out, share transport and make travel plans together.
Here are some questions you may ask before choosing your accommodation
- What are the costs – weekly, monthly?
You may be able to get a cheaper deal on a monthly or even three monthly rental. Find out what the terms are for extended stays.
- What do the accommodation costs include - food? Linen? Cleaning?
Does your accommodation include meals? Your food costs will be a big part of your budget when you are living away from home. Know your costs upfront. If food costs are not included in your rental, calculate how much you will need to spend weekly.Find out if there is a place to cook. Cooking ofr yourself is usually cheaper than going out.
Are there any other hidden costs ? For example, will you have to pay a cleaning fee when you leave?
- Where will I do my laundry?
The last thing you want is to have to dry your clothes on the radiator. Find out what facilities there are in your accommodation. Launderettes may be more expensive than washing your clothes at home. Put the costs into your budget.
- Will I need to pay a deposit?
If you are staying in an apartment you are generally required to pay a deposit. Put this into your budget and make sure that you keep the apartment in good condition to get your deposit back.
- Is there a wireless internet?
Yes, you will need this!
- What leisure facilities are there? – a common room/lounge, TV.
Accommodation with shared facilities is generally more social and gives you the opportunity to get to know people in a casual way. Just hanging out after work with others and sharing a drink without having to go out can make a place feel like home.
- How far is the accommodation from your work? How far is it from the fun things I like – bars? beaches? City centre?
Where you stay will affect your transport costs. It is recommended that you stay at least close to work or close to where you will go out. In Cape Town, for example, you may choose to stay near the beach if you enjoy the surf or in the city centre if you are a night owl.
Finally – see for yourself. Ask for some photos of the place you will be staying. Happy interning!
