• Prairie Land Food is a discounted food program with 11 locations in Wichita, Kansas, as well as a center in the Wichita suburb of Derby. As of September 2010, the program offered food items such as chicken breast filets, sausage, apples and carrots at 50 percent off the price of comparable items at area grocery stores.
  
  Customers can purchase the food in bulk for $20 and two hours of community service, or they can buy certain items separately. They can pick up their food items at the food program site closest to them.

Time Frame

• According to Prairie Land Food, as of September 2010, Wichita-area customers must order their food no later than the second Monday of the month. The program distributes the food to local sites on the last weekend of the month, with the exception of December, when it is the Saturday before the Christmas holiday.
  
  The time when customers can pick up their food varies based on site location.
  
  

Considerations

• After purchasing one bulk pack (known as a Prairie Pak), a patron can purchase as many groceries as he wants. The program does not authorize refunds.
  
  According to Prairie Land Food, the program requires patrons to perform two hours of community service to become eligible to purchase the food. This community service can consist of any activities that lend a "helping hand," such as coaching an elementary sports team, babysitting children or tutoring a local student.

• In addition to the discounted food program, Prairie Land Food offers scholarships to college students, and also provides grant funding for community-focused projects in the western Midwest and northern South.
