Biology Scholarships at USF
- Arthur Furst was the founding member of the scientific advisory board, which directed the activities of the vitamin and dietary supplement company GNLD. In 1995, the company began offering the Arthur Furst Award to fund research projects in biology being conducted by undergraduate students who major in biological sciences. The award is given primarily on academic merit, based on students' grade-point averages in biology. To apply for the award, students must contact the administrative assistant of the Department of Biology. The amount of the scholarship varies based on the availability of funds and is awarded once annually.
- The Department of Biology awards its Biology Department Semester Awards each year in both the fall and spring terms. To qualify for the scholarships, students must have a declared major in biology and have completed at least three years of full-time study at the University of San Francisco. The recipients of the awards are determined based upon students' grade-point averages in biology and sciences. As of June 2011, the amount of the award was $500. Applications are available from the administrative assistant of the Department of Biology.
- The Edward L. Kessel Award, given in honor of a well-known entomologist, is awarded once per year in the spring term to a graduating senior. Intended for postgraduate research or graduate studies, the award was $1,000 as of June 2011. Students must have at least a 3.50 grade-point average in biology as well as a 3.50 GPA in sciences to qualify. In addition, students must have taken at least 44 credits at the University of San Francisco, of which 16 must have come from upper-level biology courses. Applications for the Edward L. Kessel Award are available from the Department of Biology.
- The Graduate Student Scholarships in biology do not require students to complete an application. Typically, all students admitted to the University of San Francisco's competitive master's program automatically receive one of the awards. The scholarship covers the entire cost of tuition throughout their graduate studies. In addition, the scholarship typically comes with a teaching assistant post, which pays a stipend of $7,200 per year (as of June 2011) to cover students' living expenses. Additional research scholarships are also made available for select graduate students based on the availability of funds and academic merit.
