Writers Block- It Happens to Us All

Writers Block is that horrible gremlin that catches up to all of us every now and then.

You have a great story line, a great beginning, a great ending, and then it hits you, a stone wall you can't get through, under, over or around. Your mind is muddled. You can't think of anything to write. You can't decide where the plot is to go. You don't know what the characters are to say. You just can't think, period!

Now what do you do?

Ask one hundred people and you'll probably get at least 99 different responses. One thing that everyone agrees on is "Do what works for you". Well Duh, how do I know what works for me if I'm just starting out?

Below I will give you some ideas for overcoming writers block that work for a lot of people. Some will work for you, some won't. As you sit there at your desk, fighting that gremlin, try one, if that doesn't work, try another. Eventually, you will find one that works for you.

  1. Listen to music. Some like the background noise that music offers to distract your mind so that it can be recharged.

  2. Get in a quiet place. Just the opposite as background noise, but everyone is different. Try it, you might like it.

  3. Work on something boring. Allowing your mind to wander while you do something that doesn't take any concentration may help to get going again.

  4. What is your character good at? Throw just the opposite at him.

  5. Try working on another part of your piece. Get the ending out of the way, and maybe you'll wiggle around your block to see the road to get to the end.

  6. Make a list of what won't or can't happen next. If you eliminate what won't, this may allow what will happen next to appear.

  7. Write the absolutely worst scene ever. Screen writer Mike Werb says that when he gets stuck, he writes the worst seen ever and then rewrites again until he has it right.

My creative writing instructor in college said "There is no such thing as good writing, only good rewriting.

So what I'm trying to say is, write. It may not be good, but you started. Do what you need to do to get psyched, to get in the mood. Put on some music, light a candle, get where it's quiet. Whatever it takes to get rid of your writers block, do it and then write, and rewrite until you have that scene the way you want it and you suddenly realize that it is a good scene, and you can then go on and write some more.
