Definition:

Thromboembolism is the condition in which a blood clot that has formed inside a blood vessel or inside the heart (a thrombus), subsequently breaks off and travels inside the bloodstream to plug another blood vessel, causing organ damage.

For instance, a thromboembolism can produce damage to the lungs (pulmonary embolism) or the brain (stroke). The part of the thrombus that has broken off is referred to as an embolus.
