In the age of multi-tasking and busy life styles, we often forget that our machines and devices need taking care of just like everything else. Two of the most used portable devices of this generation are the mobile phone and the laptop. We use them so much in our day-to-day lives; we find it impossible to function without them. Both devices are powered by batteries and the batteries receive power through charging. Constant charging of laptops and mobile phones leads to loss of battery power reducing the functioning time of these devices to greater extents. In order to keep these gadgets in healthy conditions to last longer, we need to pay attention to the consumption of power.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth take up a lot of power while in use and while scanning. Even though you may not be using these wireless networks, if they are turned on, they continuously scan the area for available networks. This process consumes a lot of battery power. Switching off these two options when you do not need them can save a lot of power. The memory space available in your laptop, virtual and hardware is directly related to the speed of your laptop. Higher the speed, lesser the power required for a function. Defrag your computer; delete unnecessary files, and clear internet history, temporary files and cookies. Allow more space for the laptop to work efficiently. Playing computer games is another activity that uses a lot of power. Minimise computer games, if you want to conserve power. Bright screens burn a lot of power. Reduce the brightness to softer levels and this is better for your eyes too.

DVDs are heavy power consuming external devices. Avoid playing DVDs on your laptop. On the power options on your laptop, you have an option to save the battery power. Use good laptop chargers that protect your laptop from power surges. Keep a travel charger with you when you are travelling, as this can help your laptop receive the same output voltage even overseas. Laptop chargers that automatically set the voltage to requirements of the laptop are more convenient and safer power options. Overcharging and completely discharging lithium ion batteries are not recommended. Disconnect your charger when the battery reaches 80% to 90% charge and recharge when the laptop is at 20% to 10% battery power.
