Global Military Spending Was Up Well Over 50% Between 1999 to 2008 - Why?

Remember the famous quote by Einstein; "you cannot simultaneously prevent and prepare for war," well; with that bit of common sense, one has to ask how can there be peace in the Middle East as all the countries and nation-states are massively buying weapons of war? The numbers are scary, as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, India, Israel, have all expanded their weapons purchases by huge margins.
Of course, the United States, China, UK, and Russia have also increased their military hardware acquisitions as well.
The 2008 figures even increased the speed of acquisitions from 2007 even with the global economic crisis.
Does this mean the world is preparing for WWIII, or Armageddon? Scary stuff, but consider this.
There are approximately 8,500 declared nuclear weapon warheads in the World right now, and about 25% of them are sitting and ready to be launched in less than 15 minutes.
Then there is something like 23,000 declared nuclear weapons, such as bombs that are in 8 nations.
Yes, I am with you on this, it's completely out of control.
For a species that is supposed to be intelligent, it sure seems rather interesting that humans continue to develop such destructive devices, enough to finish off the human race.
Yes, every nation has the right to protect itself, including us.
Still, the facts are showing that there is a run-away push to up the ante and prepare for war, so then, is that going to be our future? Are we continually doomed to repeat? Please consider this, there has to be a better way.
