Apatite Gemstone: History, Excavation, Chemical and Physical Attributes, Uses and Healing Properties
Apatite is acclaimed as a constituent that is similar to the isomorphic hexagonal phosphate minerals, simply because it is a group of phosphate minerals in which the main component is calcium mixed with a halogen. Hence ‘Apatite' is basically phosphate mineral compound which has been used since centuries as a gemstone for its particular healing credibility.
Geological Significance / Excavation Sites: Receding back in history, this hexagonal mineral has been unearthed under European grounds. Places like Germany, Portugal, Kola Peninsula and Russia mainly carry out excavations for ‘Apatite' deposits.
The mineral has been found in different colors based on the halogen present in its composition. Deep blue Apatite, have been discovered at Bahia, Ipira in Brazil. From La Marina Mine, Boyaca and Columbia a pink Apatite deposit has been dug out. Some popular excavation sites are Cerro de Mercado, Mexico and Durango where prismatic Apatite has been quarried. Canada however offers Orange Apatite deposits, from Otter Lake and Yates Mine.
In the U.S, Maine leads in its excavations for the stone where violet crystals have been uncovered from areas like Pulsifier Quarry located at a town called Auburn. Also at Mt. Rubellite Quarry which is situated at Hebron, both these regions placed in Maine present some of the most abundant accretions of Apatite.
Apart from this yellow crystals have been extracted from the FulFord District at Colorado and Iron Mountain in Utah. The Himalayan Mines presented spectacularly large green crystals of the Apatite mineral whereas opaque Apatite has been found rich in amount at places like New Jersey at Franklin and Hamberg as well as across Amity in Orange Co. which lies at the state border.
Chemical & Physical Attributes: Configured into a di-pyramidal hexagon, Apatite measures 5 on the Mho's Scale. It maintains luster and normally is found in a cluster of massive crystals, which have a specific gravity of 3.16-3.22. It Shows double refractions and maintains properties of fluorescence and a refractive index of 1.6.
Uses of Apatite:
1. Since the Apatite mineral contains phosphorus, hence is used for the manufacture of fertilizers which are additive chemicals used in agricultural cultivations for nutritional balance.
2. As a gemstone, this compound is regarded as the birthstone for the zodiac ‘Gemini' and is known as ‘Asparagus Stone' for its green radiance.
3. This mineral deposit contains important ores, and since it is a non-radioactive compound hence to prevent mine tailings is considered an essential ore for such rare earth metals. It is part of the major science project called Hoidas Lake Project.
4. Is significant with respect to lunar space findings, where Apatite has been found as traces in moon rocks.
5. A constituent of Apatite makes it a necessary component which forms the foundation of bones, hence is essential when it comes to bone structuring projects etc. Also the mineral is a blend in toothpaste, because it neutralizes acid attacks.
Healing Properties: The stone increases the intellectual and spiritual dialect of individuals. Apatite gemstone beads have the potential to heal ailments, since it contains calcium hence treats bone maladies. Also increases the metabolic rates, thereby increasing energy and growth of organs. Otherwise the Apatite gemstone bead stimulates emotional, physical, social and psychological balance.
